Sealants

A sealant is a resin material applied to the chewing surface of a tooth  to help prevent decay.  The resin bonds into the natural grooves of a tooth, providing a barrier to help prevent bacteria and food from getting into these grooves and causing cavities.

The back teeth have uneven pits and fissures that are dfficult to keep clean because toothbrush bristles cannot reach into them.  These pits and fissures can hold plaque and food debris.  Much tooth decay occurs in these hard to clean grooves. Sealants form a thin covering to keep out plaque and debris and decrease the risk of decay.

Sealants are most frequently placed on the permanent molars of children as soon as they erupt to provide maximum protection when the teeth are most susceptible to decay.
